____________________ About your application

1. Do you want your application to be visible for public feedback?

Yes please.

2. What level of Small Grant support are you seeking?

$3000

3. What would you use this Small Grant for? (please read the guidelines of current calls on our webwewant.org Website)

The grant would be used for development of a software package + manual of good practices for the Hackbase infrastructure model.
Hackbases are ***live-in hackerspaces***, a new and neccesary residency infrastructure model for open source, theory, activism, vanguard art, and more.

The Totalism Hackbase, as the first one, started in 2011, in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.
Other spaces now call themselves or gravitate around hackbases, and are forming a small scene, including:
    * a space in rural India (Infinity Hackbase)
    * a mobile truck project in Germany (Apollo-NG)
    * a post-industrial activist project near Barcelona (Calafou)
    * a barge on the Senne river near Paris (launching soon)

This grant would immensely help propel these developments.

4. How will your project contribute to the global Web We Want movement?

Hackbases are like hackerspaces, only that hackers or hacker teams can *stay* there.
The idea is to free hackers from the time spent in their main jobs, even if for a while. Imagine that typical hackers are now basically hobbyists, working on the web they want in their free time.

This is the infrastructure to support them to do that with more and better.

The Totalism hackbase is in it's 4th season. More than 100 people resided there temporarily, and through trial & error we sketched the baseline for this new type of infrastructure. In this time we've learned and defined how to work together, and both very domain-specific and generaly applicable flows and software was sketched, and created.

This grant would allow us to do a first version release of the project. This would enable ours + other hackbases to use the upgraded suite, in turn enabling more hackers to be greatly liberated and empowered, in turn leading to a lot of typical hacker web we want awesomeness.

A sketch of the projects we work on:
    * strong focus on offline, selfhosted, "localnet" software and content
        * localnet routing
        * synchronisation between instances (local instance of Etherpad/Mediawiki/... -> public) - when connection is re-established
        * curated self-hosted suite of apps: maps, collaboration software, etc.
        * curated selfhosted content (wikis, docs for offline documentation, rural living, ...)
    * personal area networks
    * low-power networks and computing
    * studying theory in collborative ways (libraries / archives)
    * general collaboration tools & practices for hackbases
    * ...

5. When do you estimate the project you are seeking a Small Grant for will be completed?

This is an ongoing project. Lots of curating & coding has already been done in the past 3 years.

For the proposed budget, this would allow 2-3 hackbase hackers to spend their summer working on this project, instead of searching for corporate jobs.
(Typical hackbase life costs are ~400$ per person per month).

I suggest we set the v1.0 to October 1st, though previous releases would be done on a running basis.
A more detailed outline of the project can be assembled from past materials and delivered on request.

6. Provide a brief budget breakdown on how you plan to spend the grant money.

Developer subsistance : ~ 70%
Travel in Europe: ~20% (project presentation on hacker conferences and in hackerspaces)
Materials and equiptment: ~10%

7. What organisation or coalition is responsible for the grant application and where are they based?

Totalism Hackbase is EU's first hackerbase.
More info at http://totalism.org

8. What is your organisation's annual income?

The hackbase is a non-profit, covering its costs by the residents themselves. The costs have been around ~$100/week.
In the past years, the budgets were around $10.000 / year, including house rent, food, and lab investments.
We are looking to sustain and grow this, as we are currently buying land to stabilise our physical infrastructure.

9. Please list any partner organisations (if applicable) and their relevant strengths that would contribute towards the success of your project.

Of course we have a number of allegiances in other hackerspaces and hacker fractions. Other hackerbases are listed above!

10. Is this organisation or coalition a registered not-for-profit?
No

11. Will you be able to complete a simple financial report and evaluation form and return it to us within 4 weeks of the end date of the grant?
Yes

12. Approved grants will be listed on webwewant.org. However, we understand that some projects might be too sensitive to be publicly listed. If you do not want your project to be publicly listed, please explain why?

No problem!

13. I agree that receiving a small grant from the Web We Want, implies no particular endorsement of my project or organisation by any of the other partners of the Web We Want campaign, or the campaign itself.

Sure.

14. I agree that if this application is successful and I receive a small grant from the Web We Want campaign, it does not make the Web We Want campaign or any of the individuals or organisations that support it, liable for my grant project.

Yes
